Cutler Marine Engineering

Who's based at Thornham Marina?

Barry’s Reefing and Rigging services was created 5 years ago, and has been based here at Thornham Marina for 4 years. Barry has over 20 years’ experience in the industry and has previously worked with Rotostay giving him a great knowledge of the manufacturing and fitting.

Barry is able to offer a full rigging service which includes rig checks, new rigging, running and standing rigging, replacement guard wires, and the supplying, fitting and servicing of most furling systems.

He also provides a good selection of ropes that can be purchased for the cheapest prices in the area. Splicing is also offered.

With the winter fast upon us Barry has put together a few tips to help Boat Owners
1. Check all spilt pins are opened. Place your halyards fore and aft to stop them chaffing on the mast during high winds.
2. Cover your boom end with a bag to prevent birds from nesting in your boom.

For boat owners currently at the Marina, Barry is offering a 10% discount on all services.

If you are at Thornham Marina and your mast is down, Barry can provide a full rig check. If further work is needed as a result of the rig check and the work is carried out by Barry, he will deduct the cost of the rig check from your final invoice.

Call Barry today on 07970 772 686 or email barry.b.j.locke@btinternet.com to receive your quotation before the Easter rush!

Thornham Marinas' Annual Summer Party!

A big thank you to all those that came to our annual summer BBQ on the 9th August. The weather forecast was predicted to be hit and miss but once again mother nature outdone herself!

This year featured a new band called 'The Jesse Ray Band' whose music encouraged some of us to dust off our dancing shoes! The hog roast supplied by Chris from the BBQ and Banqueting Chef was delicious! We'd also like to thank the wasps for staying at home on this day and allowing us all to enjoy the tasty chilli jam...

We hope you all enjoyed your day!

Which Weekend Would You Prefer?

Dave’s Weekend
Dave
Image Found Google Images
Dave arrived at the Marina, parked up in the car park and walked to the marina office to pick up a trolley to offload the car. Whilst there Dave received a warm, friendly smile from the girls in the office, had the usual British weather chat and discussed his plans for the weekend.

After transferring all the ‘boat clobber’ in to the trolley, ensuring the most precious cargo (wine!) was safely stowed Dave headed down to his boat. It was a mere 5 minutes before the boat was loaded and he was sat in the cockpit enjoying his first chilled tipple of the day! Dave topped up the tanks with fresh water and made sure the fridge had been cooling nicely whilst he was away (Dave doesn't like to drink warm wine)!

Waiting for the tide to come in, he had a chance to complete as his wife describes ‘faffy’ jobs that he didn't get around to last weekend.

Once the tide was in, Dave cast off and made his way down the Thorney Channel excited for the weekend ahead to explore Chichester Harbour!

Steve’s Weekend
Steve
Image found on Google Images
Eventually Steve found a space to park the car about a 5 minute walk to his tender – not ideal but it would have to do. He somehow managed to balance everything from the boot of his car precariously in his arms and set off down the road looking like one half of a juggling duo.

Once at the tender Steve loaded up and put his finest rowing skills in to action! Although Steve was happy to be heading to the boat, he was dreading the thought of trying to remain on his feet whilst transferring his kit from tender to boat.

30 minutes later, Steve was able to sit back relax and enjoy his warm beer whilst waiting for the fridge to cool.

Which weekend would you prefer? If you want to have a weekend like Dave call Courtney or Jeanette now on 01243 375 335 to book your hassle free berth!

"The winter of 2013/2014 has proved to be one of the worst for many years. With winds up to 70 knots, the pontoons and all yachts, on the water and on land, have been tested. My time on land was totally uneventful, with the team keeping a careful watch. With new people arriving this year, our community grows and thrives. To have a new boat owner comment that he is not used to someone being on a pontoon to take a line says much for the atmosphere created in this special marina. Now for another sailing year in and beyond the best harbour and marina on the south coast."

Flare Amnesty - Don't Just Chuck Them In The Bin, Hand Them In!

Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit in conjunction with Ramora UK, one of the UK’s leading bomb disposal companies and the below marinas are offering "a distress flare amnesty" for private boat owners. The disposal of out-of-date flares is a growing problem for boat owners who face severe penalties if they fail to follow the correct procedures.

Out-of-date flares can be delivered to the following sites in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.

Sat 26th April - Northney Marina
Sat 10th May - Hamble Point Marina
Sat 17th May - Cowes Yacht Haven
Sun 10th Aug - Lymington Yacht Haven
Sun 19th Oct - Hamble Point Marina

The service will be between 1000hrs & 1500hrs on the above dates and will be in conjunction with open days/boat shows already taking place at the venue.

Up to ten flares per private individual will be accepted free of charge however the Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit will be asking for a charitable donation. Previous other events have charged £2 per flare. Disposal of quantities greater than ten will only be possible by prior agreement.

Over the year they hope to raise enough money to buy a sailing dinghy(ies) which they will then donate to a sailing club(s) for the use of young people who would not normally get the opportunity to experience the sport of sailing.

For further information please contact Hampshire Police Marine Unit via their email marine@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

Square Egg's, Spaghetti Trees & Flying Penguin's can only mean one thing...

April fool’s Day is an informal holiday celebrated each year on the 1st of April. Although it is not a national holiday, it is widely recognised and celebrated in many countries as a day for practical jokes & media hoaxes.

Traditionally in the UK, the joking ceases at midday and any person playing a joke after midday is an ‘April’s fool’ themselves.

Our favourite April fool’s are...

Spaghetti Tree’s - The spaghetti-tree hoax was a three-minute hoax report broadcast on April Fools' Day 1957 by the BBC current-affairs programme Panorama, purportedly showing a family in southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family "spaghetti tree". At the time spaghetti was relatively little-known in the UK, so that many Britons were unaware that spaghetti is made from wheat flour and water; a number of viewers afterwards contacted the BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees. Decades later CNN called this broadcast "the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled."

Flying Penguin’s - Flying penguins or Miracles of Evolution is a BBC film trailer made in 2008 as an April Fools' Day hoax. The film was advertised as compelling evidence for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. It was largely set on King George Island which is 75 miles from Antarctica.

The Daily Telegraph wrote that the film was "an instant classic. It is accomplished work of this kind that guarantees the BBC its unique status."
The BBC website still claims that it may attempt to film the flying penguins again because the original film did not explain how such small birds that are not used to flying, could survive long migrations over vast, stormy oceans. Miracles of Evolution was filmed with animated penguins for the occasion of April Fools' Day, and to promote the BBC iPlayer.

Square Egg’s – ITV’s Daybreak presenters tried to fool the nation this morning with an interview from a Freedom Food Farm which has become the first in the world to rear chickens that can lay square eggs. While the shape makes it convenient for eating, it also means making egg sarnies has become even simpler.

Have you been fooled today? Send in your best April fool’s pranks to info@thornhammarina.com !

We all enjoy spring time as it gives us a chance to brain storm (or thought disco as our boss likes to call it) to bring together ideas of what we can improve on in the yard. This year's plan is coming together and I am sure all of our Boat Owners will notice on their return in the winter!

5. Warmer Weather!
The most exciting thing about Spring is knowing that warmer weather is on its way. The heaters can be placed in to storage in the office and the windows opened!

Happy 1st Day Of Spring Everyone after all it also International Day of Happiness! :D :D :D :D :D :D
