Useful Winterisation Tip

Yacht Dougout passed on this useful piece of advice to us to share with all boat owners...

Ranging Cable
Picture From..
It is a good idea to remove anchor and cable when ashore for winter.

Cable should be faked out across a large plastic crate to allow the air to circulate and the rain to wash.

The cable should be inspected and any rust appearances treated with rust care: Fertan is recommended. Ensure that full movement of the Flukes occur.

This evolution also allows the anchor locker to be thoroughly aired, if you are feeling enthusiastic and energetic you can also give it a quick wash.

If you have useful tips and advice send them to

Happy Winter!

Congratulations To Yacht Origo!

The Thornham Team would like to say a huge congratulations to Nick Dale owner of Yacht Origo who has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours. We asked Nick to send us a few words so we could share his special day with everyone...

"It was a great day at Windsor, last time I was there I was marching through the castle on the Queens Diamond Jubilee parade, another unforgettable experience. I was awarded the MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours list 2012, partly for my hard work and leadership as the Station Warrant Officer (the senior Non-Commissioned rank) at RAF Lyneham during the lead up to station closure, but mainly for my role in organising, training and conducting over 350 repatriation ceremonies of service personnel killed on operations. It was a huge honour to receive the medal from The Princess Royal, she had been our Honorary Air Commodore at RAF Lyneham and I think she was as thrilled as I was with the award. My family, including my mum were delighted to be with me for the investiture, and after a fascinating tour of the castle, we celebrated with a pub lunch; what a day!  I have just recently been invalided out of the RAF Regiment just short of my 55th birthday, having enlisted in 1979, and amongst other things, serving all over the world, fighting in most of "Tonies Wars" and sailing the Nic55 Lord Portal westward around Cape Horn on an expedition to circumnavigate South America."

Congratulations Nick - Yacht Origo Based at Thornham Marina!

What Is Missing Off Your Winter Maintenance List?

Now that winter is approaching it is time for Boat Owners to start compiling their ‘winter maintenance list’. Some come in to the office to share their lists and ask for advice on certain tasks or who we can recommend to undertake them. (Click here to see who we do recommend) Out of all the maintenance lists I’ve seen there is always one crucial thing missing - Service Life Jackets!

The most important thing to carry on board (apart from wine and food!) whilst out sailing is safety equipment. Life Jackets, Life Buoys, Flares, VHF etc…

It is as important to service this equipment regularly as it is to carry them. There’s no point in having a life jacket on board if it does not work! Check out our previous blog article about the importance of wearing a life jacket.

To keep our Boat Owners safe, we have teamed up with SeaSafe LTD a company who provide a hassle free life jacket service

All you have to do to stay safe on the water next summer is…

1. Pop into the office with your life jacket, fill out a short form with your name, address and phone number.

2. We will then send your life jacket to Seasafe, where they will service your life jacket in their factory.

3. Seasafe will then call you to give you some general information about your life jacket as well as things you may not realise need replacing or fixing.

4. Seasafe will then return your life jacket to us for you to collect within 14 working days.

Make sure your life jacket works before you hit the water!

A Visit From West Wittering Juniors!

On Tuesday, 21st August our pontoon's were decorated with an array of colourful topper's and excited hungry children!

Each year West Wittering Sailing Club hold a junior week with lots activities around Snow Hill Creek in the harbour. During this week they also plan a 'destination sail', which allows the confident young sailors to sail slightly further afield enabling them to use the skills they have learnt during the week to plan their course.

Although it was not the sunniest of days, it was very warm with plenty of breeze. We love welcoming the Juniors to Thornham for the afternoon. It really is a lovely sight to see such enthusiasm for sailing in the younger generation! What a fantastic way to spend a week of your summer holiday.

Arial View of the Fleet
The busiest day of the year for the Solent! Round The Island Race sponsored by J.P Morgan Asset Management.

It is the fourth largest sporting event in the UK and was first organised by the Island Sailing Club. The course is 50 miles long, starting from the Squadron in Cowes. Notice To Berth Holders

Berth Holders,

Please be aware that whilst works are carried out to replace the pontoon's there will be some disruption to power/water supply.

At present the water supply to pontoon's has been switched off, however water is still available in the yard.
Power is working at present, however may be switched off for short periods of time throughout the works.

If you are planning to come down to your boat and require a power supply please call the office on 01243 375 335 so alternative arrangements can be made.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but would like to thank you all for your co-operation.

Many Thanks,

The Work Has Begun - Whooooop Whooooop!

The guys from Walcon have arrived in the yard & started work! After a long 2 year planning battle, work has finally begun to replace the 'loved' existing pontoon berths.

The Team at Thornham are so excited to see the completed look, as are our boat owners! The present pontoon’s were installed in 1990 with a layout that was acceptable for that time. The proposed layout is designed to comply with today’s standards as advised by The Yacht Harbour Association and the British Marine Federation. This will allow a greater turning circle for berth holders to enter their berths. They will also have an electricity supply to each berth.

There may be a little disruption to berthing arrangements until the work has been completed but please call Jeanette in the office to find out more on 01243 375 335.

Jeanette has been popping down some morning's to film their progress so i will try to keep you all updated as much as possible!

Jeanette would also like to say a big thank you to all our berth holders for their co-operation through out the busy period and their ongoing support.

The Boat Project Launch - Monday The 7th May 2012

On Monday the 7th May the Boat Project Boat (yet to be named) will be launched to set sail on her maiden voyage.

The Boat outside the Boat Shed for her Press Launch

A 30ft Day Sailer designed by Simon Rogers looks like a completely normal boat on paper, but in real life she is different to any vessel previously built. The reason she is unique is because she has been created from 1000’s of pieces of wood donated from all over the world. But these weren't just any pieces of wood - each piece has an unforgettable story or a fond memory behind it. From a shaving of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar to a child’s first wooden train set, each item has been carefully placed to create this fantastic vessel.

For the past year the boat shed has been a hive of activity with momentous occasions taking place, and on Monday the 7th of May the boat will be launched in to Thornham’s deep water pool.
100’s of people from all over the south coast will be arriving at the marina on this day to watch their memory float for the very first time.

The launch itself will start from 1pm with Live Music, Food, Drinks and Celebrations plus special guests (yet to be revealed)!

This will be a ticketed event with limited parking spaces so please let us know if you intend to be visiting the marina on this day via car. For non boat owners of Thornham please contact The Boat Project or call 01243 374 888 to find out how you can attend.

For Boat Owners of the Marina, we have a special VIP area but spaces are limited so please call or drop us an email if you intend to come along for the day. Please feel free to bring your own picnics and deck chairs to make yourself comfy!

We hope to see you for this spectacular event!

End Of A Busy Launch Season...

As we wave good bye to friends old and new I have been reflecting on this year’s winter experience. It has been a busy season. John has settled in to the yard and enjoyed his first Winter, despite some freezing temperatures and windy conditions, the team have always entered in to any task with a smile and willing attitude no matter how busy or long their days have been and I know how much you have appreciated this by your lovely emails and comments I have received. Thank you for keeping the team’s spirits high!

To all our New Boat Owner’s that joined I hope you enjoyed you stay and we look forward to seeing you next winter any feedback about your winter stay would be most welcome, and to all our returning Boat Owners who arrived eager to relay their tales from summer’s season thank you for choosing us year on year we look forward to seeing you next winter also.

Our new luxurious Scrubbing Station opened (much to our Boat Owner’s delight)! I think most of you know by now that we are embarking on our biggest project yet - the replacement of our pontoon’s (whoooopeee!, I hear our berth holders saying). The land and the water will be a hive of activity from the 23rd of April and I apologise now for any disruption this may cause but I think we all agree that this project will be the icing on the cake - and there will be lots of cake and champers when the project is complete!

Although we are nearing the end of our incredibly busy launch season, the hard work does not end there. Summer is our cleansing period where Cliff, John & Gary will spend their summer days preparing the yard for your arrival in October. We also have a new office being built for our on-site tenant Multihull World. Last but not least we shall prepare ourselves for our infamous annual BBQ! Dates to be confirmed and invitations to be sent out shortly!

We love looking after you and your boat during your stay with us, we do get a little sad when you leave but we know we will be seeing you again soon so it leaves me and my team to wish you a very safe sailing season!

"There’s no thrill in easy sailing when the skies are clear and blue, there’s no joy in merely doing this which any one can do. But there is some satisfaction that is mighty sweet to take, when you reach a destination that you never thought you’d make." - Unknown

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Happy Saint David's Day From All At Thornham!

Saint David, or Dewi Sant, as he is known in Wales is the patron saint of Wales. Saint David's Day is celebrated on the 1st of March every year. The date was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David.

There are many Welsh Traditions that happen throughout Wales on Saint David's Day. I'm sure Jeanette remembers all too well going to school in her Welsh Woman costume.

Every year parades are held in Wales to commemorate St. David. The largest of these is held in Cardiff and is formally attended by either the Queen of England or the Prince of Wales. Parades are a mixture of folklore and military tattoo.

Children in Wales take part in school concerts or eisteddfodau, with recitation and singing being the main activities.

The flag of Saint David often plays a central role in the celebrations and can be seen flying throughout Wales.

Cawl (Welsh for Soup/Stew) is frequently prepared and consumed on St. David's Day. The recipe for this varies from season to season and county to county. But I have found a delicious recipe for Welsh Cakes...

  • 225g/8oz Self Raising Flour
  • 110g/4oz Welsh Salted Butter
  • 1 Egg
  • Handful of Sultanas
  • 85g/3oz Caster Sugar
  • Extra Butter For Greasing
  • Milk, If Needed
Preparation Method
  • Rub the fat into the sieved flour to make breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, dried fruit and then the egg. Mix to combine, then form a ball of dough, using a splash of milk if needed.
  • Roll out the pastry until it is a 5mm/¼in thick and cut into rounds with a 7.5-10cm/3-4in fluted cutter.
  • You now need a bake stone or a heavy iron griddle. Rub it with butter and wipe the excess away. Put it on to a direct heat and wait until it heats up, place the Welsh cakes on the griddle, turning once. They need about 2-3 minutes each side. Each side needs to be caramel brown before turning although some people I know like them almost burnt.
  • Remove from the pan and dust with caster sugar while still warm. Some people leave out the dried fruit, and split them when cool and sandwich them together with jam.

This week's tip follows on from that article, provided by Sticky Stapylton who responded to our email...

"Thank you for your excellent advice.

As a sail training instructor I know the need. Can I suggest that you consider also emphasising the need to check the life jacket before putting it on?  The number of times on sail training yachts I have found the gas cylinder is either not properly screwed in or has actually been discharged is legion! Unless the cylinder is firmly secured it will fail to inflate the life jacket if fired."

Life Jackets Save Lives!

We at Thornham Marina believe strongly in wearing a life jacket while out at sea and thought we would share our advice on why it is so important in the unpredictable conditions of the sea. It could buy you time & save your life.

Firstly make sure that life jackets are readily available and accessible on board, RNLI research has found that out of 98% of people carrying a life jacket only 52% often use them.

Whilst buying a life jacket make sure you check the fit, it won't be as effective if it is not snug around your shoulders as it won't keep your head afloat. If it is too loose, the floatation will push the jacket up around your face. If it is too small, it won't keep your body afloat. It is also a good idea to choose a brightly coloured life jacket so that you can be easily spotted if you do fall into the water.

All of this information is very useful, but... what happens if you fall into the water and you life jacket doesn't inflate?

This is why it also just as important to get them serviced annually. Thornham Marina have teamed up with Seasafe to provide boat owners with a hassle free servicing station.

All you have to do is...

Teak Deck Maintenance

Hello Readers,

With the launching season approaching I thought I’d post some little weekly tips from our Tenants on-site. Our first tip is from Steve Hulme who about how to maintain your teak decking.

"As the colder months approach and preparations begin for your boats winter lay-up, it is advisable to keep an eye on your teak decks.

After a rain shower or having been washed, whilst your deck is drying, check your rubber seams.  If they are staying wetter than the rest of the deck it is conceivable that the bond between the rubber and teak has failed, and should be repaired as early as possible.  If water becomes trapped within the seam it can track along the bottom of the seam and can cause long term problems that are not immediately obvious, for example; leaks into the cabin, rotting out the teak from the underside, rot to the top of deck beams (traditional laid deck) or osmosis of the fibreglass sub deck.  All this is worst case scenario and more often than not the repairs can be performed relatively quickly".

If you want to talk to Steve more in depth about this or ask him some of your own questions you can find him in the left hand side of our Big Brown Shed, or you call him on 07764 153692.  Alternatively you can email him at or visit his website at

We hope you found that useful...and fingers crossed those rubber seams do their job! - 01243 375 335 -

Don't Be Left Holding The Roller This Year. Call Thornham Now!

I know antifoul is probably the last thing on your mind right now, but I really don’t want you to miss out on our fantastic offer we have running! Every year Boat Owners leave it until the last minute to apply their antifoul before they are launched, waiting for an ideal weather window and an available weekend to come down. Don’t leave it until last minute this year, pick up the phone and book yours now. (It’s quite simple, honest!)

With our fantastic deal you can save yourself 10% by booking before the 15th of Jan. Based on an 8m boat your antifoul should cost you £223.20 but with our early bird deal your antifoul will cost just £209.84.

Let me explain what will happen when you book. I will give you a quick call or email to find out where your boat lives during the summer period so we can apply the right type of antifoul. I will also find out what colour you would like. We have 5 colours available, Shark Grey, Mid blue, Navy Blue Red & Black. Once you have a decided what colour and type, and when we have a rough launch date for you, we will pencil in a time to antifoul her. Of course this depends on the weather, but it saves you rushing down as soon as the sun shines! Before the boys start Cliff or John will lightly rub down the hull and remove any flaky bits. Once she is ready they will apply 2 coats of antifoul. This should be enough to last you 2 seasons, according to the manufactures instructions.  Primer can be applied at an additional cost at the Boat Owners request. Just before she is ready to start her summer escapades Cliff or John will touch up the patches where the pads/shores have been.

Does this deal sound good to you? If so make sure you take advantage of our great offer! Call or email myself or Jeanette now on 01243 375 335 / !
